D.S.O., B.E., M.Inst.C.E., M.I.E.Aust. : Lieutenant-Colonel, 5th Pioneer and 1st Battns., A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt and France. Joining 1st Battn. as lieutenant in command of E Coy. 3rd September, 1914, and sailing in October, was at the Anzac Landing, where wounded in May and although invalided in August, remained till the Evacuation, taking part in the Lone Pine Battle. Formed 5th Pioneer Battn. in March, 1916, taking part in the organisation of Suez Canal defences till June. Then crossing to France, served at Fleurbaix, Somme, Bullecourt, Ypres, Messines, Villers-Bretonneux and elsewhere until demobilisation. Promoted captain and major on Gallipoli; lieutenant-colonel, 1st March, 1916. Awarded D.S.O. 1st January, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches four times. Chief Electrical Engineer, Public Works Department, 1924-1929. Early education at The King''s and Sydney Grammar Schools. Later at St. Andrew''s College.
