M.C., B.A. : Captain, 41st Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting in October, 1915, and sailing with battn. in May after being commissioned 17th January, 1916, crossed to France with 3rd Division in November. Fought at Armentieres, Messines and Ypres, being in command of C Coy. at Passchendaele, wounded at Broodseinde Ridge, 4th October, 1917, and evacuated to No. 3 London General Hospital. Rejoining battn. late in February, 1918, was appointed commander of D Company in the August offensive, being wounded at Mericourt-sur-Somme on n th and returning to Australia in March, 1919. Promoted lieutenant, 15th November, 1916; captain, 7th September, 1917. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Brisbane Grammar and The Armidale Schools and Newington College. Later at St. Paul's. * This officer led the directing company in an advance through a dense fog, and his accurate leading was mainly responsible for the safety of the whole line . . . Three nights later, he again led his company on a difficult enterprise with success, until he was wounded and had to be evacuated. He showed marked efficiency in two difficult operations.—London Gazette, 11th January, 19x9.
