M.C., C. de G., B.E. : Captain, 5th Field Coy., Engineers, A.I.F., France. Enlisting in May, 1915, was transferred to Engineers and, sailing as lieutenant 23rd November, crossed to France via Suez. In winter of 1916 was in charge of Corps Royal Engineers Dump at Meaulte and subsequently Adjutant 2nd Australian Engineers till wounded 8th May, 1917, at Bullecourt. On recovery, after being a short time with 2nd Division Field Coys., was trainee to Staff Officer, Chief Engineer Australian Corps in November and December. For two weeks in January, 1918, was with French Field Coy. near Chalonssur- Marne and successively Corps Demolition and Bridging Officer in front of Amiens in April, 1918, and then Staff Officer, Chief Engineer from May to the end of 1918. Awarded M.C.* at Pozieres and Croix de Guerre avec Etoile and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at The King''s School. Later one year in Arts. * After the capture of enemy trenches he, on his own initiative and by himself, carried out a most risky reconnaissance.
