D.S.O., Eng. : Major, 1st Australian Siege Battery, A.I.F., France. Was a regular officer with Royal Australian Artillery, 1908-15, attaining rank of captain. Joining A.I.F. upon release from garrison duty, was gazetted lieutenant, 21st May, 1915, and temporary captain, 8th July. Sailing for England 17th July with No. 1 Battery, Australian Siege Brigade, arrived in France 27th February, 1916, with 54th Siege Battery, O Siege Brigade. In June appointed second in command 55th Battery and later transferred as second in command to 54th, on Arras (including Vimy Ridge) and Somme fronts till wounded at Fampoux 14th April, 1917, and evacuated to England. On recovery was attached H.Q. 36th (Aust.) Heavy Artillery Brigade 31st July and was for a short time with Counter Battery Staff (15th Corps). Appointed to command 54th (later 1st Australian Siege) Battery, 1st October at Ypres, serving until the end of the War. Promoted captain, 29th June, 19 16; temporary major, 1st October, 1917. Awarded D.S.O. 1st January, 1919, and Mentioned in Despatches twice. Member of S.U. Scouts (Sergeant), 1905-8. Early education at Sydney Grammar School. Later at St. Paul's College.
