B.E., A.M.I.E.Aust. : Lieutenant, 2nd Australian Tunnelling Coy., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 6th September, 1915, was commissioned 1st March, 1916, and, sailing with 5th Coy. 25th May, joined 2nd at Sailly near Armentieres, 25th September, and was employed at mining, countermining, and building deep dug-outs. Moved to Poperinghe 6th February, 1917, building dug-outs at Hill 60 and countermining on canal and when coy. took over from the French at Coxyde, 17th June, countermining in sand on Belgian coast, beyond the canal. Was wounded 10th July, but remained on duty. Moved to Somme area 27th November, took part against German Push of March, 1918, assisted in attack on Hindenburg Line and, after the Armistice, removed German mines and traps. Promoted lieutenant, 1st January, 1917. Early education at Sydney High School.
