M.C., Law I I I : Captain, 34th Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting in June, 1915, as lieutenant and sailing 2nd May, 1916, served in France from 21st November till 30th December, when injured by shell explosion at Houplines. Invalided to Australia in July, 1917. In Australia was A.D.C. to General Officer Commanding 2nd Military District, Sydney, till re-embarkation in November as Adjutant, troopship Canberra . Rejoining battn. at Villers-Bretonneux 5th April, was gassed there, 28th May, wounded at Bray, 20th August, and again at Peronne on 31st. After the Armistice was Adjutant, Weymouth Depot, for troops awaiting demobilisation. Promoted captain, 1st August, 1916. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Commission in A.M.F. Early education at Newington College. * By able leadership of his company under most difficult conditions he greatly assisted the advance, and when held up by machine-gun fire he led a party forward and captured two guns and their crews. After taking his objective he went forward with a party and captured a heavy minenwerfer and seven men.—London Gazette, 7th November, 1918.
