Enlisting in England, was commissioned second-lieutenant 12th May, 1915, and posted to Liverpool Regt., crossing with it to France and serving until the Armistice. Promoted lieutenant, 1st July, 1917; acting captain in November. Mentioned in Despatches. First Rhodes Scholar for N.S.W., 1904. Early education at Sydney Grammar School.
