M.C., C. de G., B.Sc. : Captain, 51st Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 15th June, 1915, and sailing 2nd November, joined 28th Battn. in Egypt; transferred to 51st in March, 1916, and, crossing to France in June, served at Fleurbaix, Pozieres and Mouquet Farm, where wounded 15th August. On recovery rejoined battn. and fought at Messines, Ypres, Dernancourt and elsewhere until wounded again at Hourges 2nd August, 1918. After the Armistice was Education Officer 1st Division till demobilisation. Promoted lieutenant, 1st July, 1916; captain, 20th April, 1917. Awarded M.C.* and C. de G. 7th January, 1919, and Mentioned in Despatches. University Medallist (Geology) and Deas-Thomson Research Scholar. * He took command when his company commander was killed, and inspired all ranks by his fine example. During a night attack, he led his company forward with great dash till he was severely wounded.—London Gazette, 14th November, 1916.
